Report: Bengals' Eifert targeting Weeks 4-6 for return

Mark Zerof / USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert is targeting a return to game action at some point between Week 4 and Week 6 of the regular season, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

After beginning to jog for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery in May, Rapoport adds, Eifert hopes to be cleared on the short side of that timeline.

The rehab from an injury suffered in his first career Pro Bowl appearance has been a long process to this point. Jogging still stands as a promising development, but it no longer appears Eifert will be able to avoid missing time in the regular season.

Tyler Kroft and C.J. Uzomah will see increased reps with the first-team offense until the 25-year-old is able to make his healthy return. When cleared, anything resembling the form that saw him tie for the league lead with 13 touchdowns last season should quickly allow Eifert to re-emerge as the No. 2 target alongside star wideout A.J. Green.

Cincinnati hosts the Miami Dolphins for a Thursday night matchup in Week 4 before heading out on the road for games against the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots thereafter.
