49ers waiting on Kaepernick; 'It's not time' to name starting QB

With two weeks of the preseason already in the rearview mirror, the San Francisco 49ers appear no closer to deciding on a starting quarterback.

That's due in large part to Colin Kaepernick's health. The veteran quarterback returned to practice Monday, after sitting out several weeks with arm fatigue. In his absence, Blaine Gabbert has taken the majority of first-team snaps.

But offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Tuesday that the 49ers won't make a decision until Kaepernick has been given a shot to win the job.

"It's not time,” Modkins said, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "It's a competition and Kap hasn't had a chance to perform, yet. So, when that happens and when coach feels like it's time, we'll do that. But right now it's not time. We've still got a ways to go before we play.

"I thought Colin was fine yesterday," Modkins continued. "I don't think there's anything different as far as where he stands in the competition. We'll see how the week goes, see how he progresses and see what happens on Friday."

Gabbert's play has been mixed in the preseason. He's gone 10-of-19 for 132 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, but the 49ers' offense looked inconsistent with him under center.

Modkins, however, thinks Gabbert has set himself up well in the fight with Kaepernick.

"Blaine's done a good job," Modkins said. "I was pleased with what he did. I like to see how he started and he responded. He got the team moving. So, I think Blaine's done a good job. He's been accurate with the ball. All our quarterbacks have, and I think Blaine’s been good."
