Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones will miss the remainder of the preseason after suffering a Grade 2 separation of his left shoulder Friday against the New York Jets, head coach Jay Gruden announced.

Jones doesn't have an exact timeline for his return, but Gruden said he's already made "significant strides" and the team has "high hopes" for his Week 1 availability.

If healthy, the 2015 third-round pick will enter the season as Washington's unquestioned lead back.

Jones took 144 carries for 490 yards and three touchdowns in his first year with the Redskins, working primarily as a rotational ball-carrier behind the since-departed Alfred Morris.

Chris Thompson, Keith Marshall, and Rob Kelley will see increased first-team opportunities until the 23-year-old is cleared for contact.
