An already thin Indianapolis Colts secondary was dealt a significant blow Monday, as head coach Chuck Pagano announced star cornerback Vontae Davis is week to week with an ankle injury.

The unofficial designation doesn't provide a clear timeline, but it's at least possible the ailment puts Davis' status for Week 1 in doubt.

As a result of the uncertainty surrounding Davis, in addition to a number of injuries to other players at the position, the Colts are reportedly turning to the free-agent market in search of reinforcements.

Veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie is among the unsigned players in town for a workout Monday, Stephen Holder of The Indy Star reports.

Cromartie, 33, is coming off a disappointing 2015 season in which he returned to the New York Jets. Though his once-strong coverage abilities may be in decline as he enters his 11th season, the Colts simply don't have many other options.

"Not pretty," Pagano said of the injury-riddled cornerback group. "It's a little scary right now."

Davis is far and away the Colts' top defensive player, so any absence extending into the regular season would be difficult to overcome, regardless of veteran free agents added.

Indianapolis will likely proceed with caution for the remainder of the preseason in hopes of having Davis and the rest of the cornerback group healthy in time for the season-opening matchup with the Detroit Lions.
