Report: Panthers, Short reach impasse in contract negotiations

Bob Donnan / USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers and defensive tackle Kawann Short reached an impasse in contract negotiations, and it's unlikely both sides will reach a new deal before the 2016 season, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Short was named a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler for the first time, following a breakout season in 2015. The 27-year-old recorded 55 tackles, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles, leading the Panthers' defensive front.

Entering the 2016 season, Short will earn $1.03 million in base salary and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the campaign.

With the Panthers expected to be in Super Bowl contention for the foreseeable future, reaching an agreement with Short will be of paramount importance for general manager Dave Gettleman.
