LSU's Miles deeply regrets dismissing Mathieu from team in 2012

In the wake of Tyrann Mathieu's five-year, $62.5-million extension Tuesday, LSU head coach Les Miles is harboring some colossal regrets.

Mathieu was an electrifying presence during his two seasons at LSU, captivating the nation during the 2011 season where he was named a Heisman Trophy finalist, after excelling at safety and kick returner.

However, Miles dismissed Mathieu from the team in 2012 for a violation of team rules, and the defensive back was later arrested for marijuana possession two months later.

Since being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, Mathieu has developed into a genuine leader, both on and off the field, and Miles said he deeply laments his decision.

"That's one of the worst things I've ever done," Miles said Wednesday.

With a proven track record of developing NFL players, Miles may be excused, but Mathieu should serve as a model for greater tolerance and support going forward.
