Hopkins ends holdout, will report to Texans camp

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

DeAndre Hopkins is ending his contract holdout after just one day.

The Houston Texans wide receiver, who declined to report along with the rest of his teammates this weekend, announced he'll arrive at camp Sunday.

From Hopkins' statement, via Tania Ganguli of ESPN:

I too am disappointed that the Texans organization has elected not to enter into contract negotiation to secure my future as a Texan. I have expressed my sincere position regarding my contract status and with sound mind have expressed my stance to the Texans organization. My focus also is on the 2016 season and to help my team reach our ultimate goal. Having said that I am returning to the Houston Texans to play for a Super Bowl in Houston, Texas. I will be holding a 3 p.m. press conference at Reliant stadium today. We are excited about returning to the team and grind this camp.

Hopkins' initial decision to stay away from practice was met with reports suggesting the Texans were unwilling to negotiate while two years remained on his rookie contract. Though short-lived, the holdout appears to have had its desired impact on that stance.

The Texans will be willing to work on a new deal for Hopkins now that he's back with the team, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Whether an agreement is reached in the coming weeks, prior to the 2017 season, or at some point ahead of free agency, it's likely only a matter of time before Houston makes the 24-year-old one of the highest-paid players at his position.

For the time being, the Texans have themselves one of the league's most substantial bargains.

Hopkins is tentatively scheduled to play the 2016 campaign under a base salary of just $1 million, and Houston already picked up his fifth-year option at a cost of $7.9 million the following year.

The former first-rounder earned a Pro Bowl nod last season despite some underwhelming play from his quarterbacks, hauling in 111 receptions for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns.
