The Miami Dolphins placed newly signed running back Arian Foster on the physically unable to perform list ahead of the team's first training camp practice Friday.

Foster is still working his way back from the Achilles tear that ended his 2015 season.

Though he'd evidently reached a level at which the Dolphins were comfortable closing a deal with him earlier this month, it was always possible that there was still progress to be made before he'd be cleared to practice.

Miami will presumably look to avoid rushing him back to the field and instead will focus on getting him back to 100 percent in time for Week 1.

When healthy, Foster will compete for a lead backfield role alongside 2015 fourth-round pick Jay Ajayi. With head coach Adam Gase having spoken highly of his receiving ability, the four-time Pro Bowler already appears to be the heavy favorite for passing-down snaps.
