Report: Steelers not close to extension with Timmons

Lawrence Timmons' future with the Steelers remains very much in doubt as training camp gets underway.

The veteran linebacker, who's spent his entire career in Pittsburgh, is tentatively scheduled to have his contract expire at the end of his 10th NFL season. While the two sides have discussed an extension of late, an agreement is still "not close," sources told Mark Kaboly of The Tribune-Review.

Timmons and the Steelers still have plenty of time to reach a multi-year deal before he has the opportunity to hit free agency next March. As Kaboly adds, however, the team typically doesn't negotiate such deals during the regular season.

Barring a change to that strategy, it would thus appear a soft deadline is fast approaching.

The two sides can be expected to continue to exchange numbers throughout the season, and the Steelers should be particularly intent on finding a way to lower the linebacker's $15.1-million cap hit.

A lack of progress to this point, though, appears to indicate a possibility that Timmons will be allowed to play out his contract and test the market at season's end.
