Report: Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick agree to 1-year, $12M deal

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

It finally happened.

The New York Jets have reached an agreement with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on a one-year, $12-million contract, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The deal is fully guaranteed, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter, and he can earn an additional $3 million in performance bonuses.

The Jets set a deadline of 7 p.m. ET or the contract would be off the table with Fitzpatrick arriving at the facility just before that time, reports NFL Network's Jeff Darlington.

The Jets and Fitzpatrick were negotiating throughout the offseason. There were reports in early June he would be open to a deal at the terms he eventually signed, though the Jets were reportedly not interested in that contract.

The $12 million ranks Fitzpatrick the 23rd highest-paid quarterback, sandwiched between Andy Dalton ($16 million) and Robert Griffin III ($7.5 million).

The Jets were planning to start Geno Smith in Fitzpatrick's absence, but will presumably promote the 33-year-old to the top of the depth chart.

Several teammates, including Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Matt Forte, voiced their want for a deal to get done.

Last season was the most productive of Fitzpatrick's career, throwing for over 3,900 yards and 31 touchdowns.
