Cardinals add Donald Butler to bolster LB depth

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals have signed free-agent linebacker Donald Butler, the team announced Wednesday.

Butler joins the Cardinals after playing the first five years of his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers.

Though he was released after a disappointing 2015 campaign, the move is certainly made with the hope that his production level will fall in line with the four seasons prior.

Butler started 53 games for the Chargers from 2011-2014, tallying 244 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 12 passes defensed, and three interceptions.

He'll add talent and depth to one of few areas of need on an otherwise stout Arizona defense, where he'll challenge for a role behind Kevin Minter and Deone Bucannon.

Arizona released linebacker Quayshawn Nealy in a corresponding roster move.
