Report: Coughlin joining NFL's football operations department

Tom Coughlin has found himself a way to stay involved in the NFL during his first year away from coaching.

As teams open training camps this week, Coughlin is set to join the league's football operations department, reports Jim Trotter of ESPN.

Though his role hasn't yet been made clear, it had long been expected that he'd seek a position that keeps him around the game.

Coughlin first established himself as a successful head coach upon leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 68-60 record across eight seasons from 1995-2002. He then spent 12 years with the New York Giants after catching on with the club in 2004, posting a 102-90 record and earning two Super Bowl titles.

The 69-year-old indicated upon parting ways with the Giants this offseason that he'd still be interested in coaching at the NFL level.

An interview with the Philadelphia Eagles didn't lead to an offer, but Coughlin will almost certainly be a top candidate next offseason if he continues to put off retirement.
