The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday that they signed safety Kurt Coleman to a three-year contract extension.

"It's a blessing," Coleman said, according to the team's press release. "When you go through situations you want what's best for your family and what's best for the team, and I'm really excited. I'm fortunate to be a part of this team for three more years. Training camp is the beginning of a new season, and for me, now that this is out of the way, I am completely focused."

Reports of Coleman's new deal first surfaced Tuesday, but the terms weren't immediately made available.

The three-year pact is worth a total of $17 million, with $7 million guaranteed, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Coleman was heading into the final season of the two-year deal he signed to join the Panthers last spring, but an incredibly productive season made him a priority looking to the future.

The 28-year-old started all 15 appearances in his debut season in Carolina, racking up 90 tackles, one sack, and a team-high seven interceptions.

His play-making ability on the back end is key for a Panthers secondary looking to follow up on last year's success while overcoming the loss of star cornerback Josh Norman.
