Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has been placed on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp, the team announced Wednesday.

Charles is working his way back from the ACL tear that ended his 2015 season after just five games.

Though he was able to do some individual work during minicamp, it was always considered likely the Chiefs would bring him along slowly over the summer.

All indications are that he's still in line to be back on the field in time for the regular-season opener. The progress he's able to make in the coming weeks will determine whether the Chiefs will opt to get him training camp or preseason work beforehand.

Charles remains one of the NFL's most dynamic playmakers when healthy, as he's racked up no less than five yards per carry in each of his eight seasons thus far.

Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware will continue to see work in the lead backfield spots until the four-time Pro Bowler is cleared to make his return to a featured role.
