Report: Jets, Fitzpatrick still not close to agreement

The reporting of players to training camp Wednesday appears to have had no impact on the contract standoff between the New York Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The two sides haven't had any recent discussions and remain far apart with summer practices set to get underway, a source told Ed Werder of ESPN.

While things can certainly change quickly with any contract negotiations - particularly those involving a potential starting quarterback - Werder added that a resolution isn't expected any time soon.

For the time being, New York will begin training camp with Geno Smith as the starting quarterback.

It remains to be seen whether the Jets will make any sort of progress with Fitzpatrick in the coming weeks. A deal to get him back in the fold should remain a priority ahead of the regular season, but the urgency will likely be determined by Smith's performances atop the depth chart.

Fitzpatrick put together the most productive season of his career with New York in 2016, tallying 3,905 passing yards and 31 touchdowns while leading the way to a 10-6 record.

Smith struggled with turnovers throughout his two years as the starter. Working in Chan Gailey's quarterback-friendly system could have him poised for an improvement in that area, however, and the Jets have expressed confidence in the former second-round pick's development.
