49ers' Colin Kaepernick: Receives clearance from Colorado doctor

Kaepernick received clearance from the Colorado doctor that performed his shoulder surgery in November, but the 49ers' medical staff must still clear him for training camp, which kicks off Sunday, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Analysis:

In a two-month span, Kaepernick underwent procedures on a torn labrum in his left shoulder and a ligament tear in his right thumb, as well as a scope on his left knee, but the first surgery was the one that limited his reps in the offseason program. As a result, Blaine Gabbert currently has a leg up in the competition for starting QB, which will begin in earnest this weekend. Considering Kaepernick's noted mobility would be an asset in new head coach Chip Kelly's system, his ability to take the practice field immediately will aid in his quest for the top gig.
