DeAndre Hopkins wants extension to reflect his value

DeAndre Hopkins is next in line to receive a big-money contract extension from the Houston Texans, with the star receiver entering the penultimate year of his rookie deal.

The Texans have traditionally rewarded their first-round picks with extensions at this stage of their rookie contracts.

With negotiations believed to be ongoing, Hopkins has been careful not to publicly state his exact contract demands. He remained vague recently, saying he is looking for an extension that reflects his "worth."

"I'm not looking for a certain range," Hopkins said, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN. "I just want to be treated for what I'm worth. That's fair to say, right?"

Hopkins' performance puts him among the league's elite receivers.

In 2015, the 24-year-old was third in the league in receiving yards (1,521) and catches (111), tied for third in touchdown receptions (11), and had more than double the production of the Texans' next wideout, Nate Washington, in all three categories.

A.J. Green, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, and Julio Jones have all produced at a similar level to Hopkins over the past two-plus seasons, and all received extensions last offseason worth $14 million per year or more, with Green topping the position with an annual salary of $15 million.

Hopkins wouldn't give an update on any progress between his camp and the Texans, but emphasized he wants to remain with the franchise.

"You know, that's between my agents and the Texans," Hopkins said. "I love this city. I don't want to play anywhere else but here. So the rest will work itself out, hopefully."
