Bengals release Taylor Mays

The Cincinnati Bengals have released safety Taylor Mays, the team announced Saturday.

The Bengals signed Mays in April to a reported one-year, $840,000 contract.

He spent last season with the Oakland Raiders, making 26 tackles in 14 games, including five starts. He spent 2011-2014 with the Bengals.

This is the fourth time Mays has signed with a team only to be cut before the regular season. He spent time with both the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions during the 2015 offseason before joining the Raiders, and was part of Oakland's final roster cuts last September, but re-signed with the team after Week 1.

Mays was a highly touted prospect coming out of USC in 2010, but has never lived up to the hype on an NFL field.
