The Chicago Bears have released safety and special teams ace Omar Bolden, the club announced Friday.

Bolden joined the Bears on a one-year deal in March after spending the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos.

While the decision to move on from Bolden with training camp so close might seem curious, the veteran's deal with the Bears was reportedly worth $840,000 with $80,000 fully guaranteed, so he was no lock to make the team.

The move was thought to have been made to make room for Charles Tillman's one-day retirement contract, but the Bears confirmed the two moves were unrelated.

Consequently, Chicago has one open roster spot.
