Texans' J.J. Watt: Undergoes back surgery Thursday

Watt (groin) underwent back surgery Wednesday and will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Analysis:

Watt dealt with a herniated disk in his back for some time last season among other injuries. The operation may have been executed because of that disk, but conclusive reasoning for the surgery is not yet known. The Texans expect Watt to be ready for the season opener Sept. 11 against the Bears in Houston based on the fact that he has never missed an NFL game in his career regardless of injury. The star right end earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015-16, while racking up 76 combined tackles and a league-leading 17.5 sacks.
