Report: Miller's agent asked Broncos to consider trade before deal

Chris Humphreys / USA TODAY Sports

Prior to signing a six-year, $114-million deal Friday, Von Miller's agent asked the Denver Broncos for formal permission to explore trade options, reports Mike Klis of 9News, citing sources.

Miller's agent, John Branion, and the Broncos negotiated on July 7-9 before Friday's signing deadline to exchange offers.

When Miller's camp became frustrated by a lack of guaranteed money, Branion asked general manager John Elway to consider trading the All-Pro pass-rusher and asked for permission to contact teams.

It's unclear whether the trade request was real or simply a negotiating tactic, but, either way, Elway denied the request and eventually Miller and the Broncos agreed to a deal.

The 27-year-old linebacker threatened to sit out the season if he had to play under the franchise tag. If Miller had been traded, he still would have had to sign with his new team prior to the deadline.
