New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson will likely begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab a broken leg, reports ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The 26-year-old's rehab is going well, but the Jets want to be cautious in the early weeks of training camp. The goal is for him to be ready when the team opens their regular season Sept. 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Wilkerson, who signed a five-year, $85-million contract Friday, suffered the injury in the Jets final 2015 regular-season game.

The sixth-year pro had a career-high 12 sacks and seven pass deflections last season as part of the Jets' stellar defensive line.
