The Kansas City Chiefs and safety Eric Berry will not have a long-term deal in place prior to Friday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, according to multiple reports.

There was optimism of a last-second agreement earlier Friday, but it looks like the two sides are still too far apart to pull the trigger on a contract.

Berry is one of several franchise-tagged players who were unable to sign long-term deals in recent weeks, therefore he'll play the 2016 season under the one-year tender.

Kansas City opted for the tag to keep Berry off the free-agent market heading into the offseason. Though the designation comes with a $10.8-million salary, a multi-year agreement was thought to be the sensible solution for player and team.

The sides would be able to re-open negotiations at the end of the season in an effort to hammer out a contract before Berry hits the open market.
