Packers' Ty Montgomery: Yet to be medically cleared

Montgomery (left ankle) is yet to be medically cleared and not guaranteed to be ready for training camp, according to head coach Mike McCarthy, Packers' official site reports.

Analysis:

Montgomery dealt with ankle issues seemingly all of last season, but has been (reportedly) pain-free during practice sessions this offseason. One of the most intense position battles across the league come August will be for the Packers' No.3 wide receiver job, and if Montgomery isn't ready to earn his keep, he could be at a disadvantage. Jordy Nelson (knee) is most certainly locked in as the X-receiver, with Randall Cobb manning the slot. This leaves Montgomery to compete with Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis and Trevor Davis for subsequent slotting on the depth chart. Montgomery could have a leg up due to what he can offer on special teams, but if the Packers aren't confident in the health of his ankle, they may already have a viable replacement in rookie speedster Trevor Davis.
