Chiefs' Phillip Gaines: Likely to claim starting cornerback job

Gaines (knee) "will probably be the guy at the [other] corner spot [opposite Marcus Peters]" according to head coach Andy Reid, the Kansas City Star reports.

Analysis:

When 2015 starter Sean Smith bolted for Oakland, the starting cornerback job opposite Peters went up for grabs. Though lost to an ACL tear last September, Gaines appears to be the frontrunner for the gig. He's been unable to participate in team drills during the majority of the Chiefs' offseason program, but has taken part in individual drills and should be ready for training camp. If his knee holds up through the end of the summer, the starting job should be his to lose.
