Report: No progress in Jets' contract talks with Fitzpatrick, Wilkerson

With training camp and the July 15 deadline to sign franchise-tagged players fast approaching, the New York Jets have made no progress in their attempts to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and ink defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson to a long-term contract, sources told Brian Costello of the New York Post.

The situation with Fitzpatrick has dominated the Jets' offseason, but the standoff with Wilkerson has become the more pressing issue.

The two parties have until 4 p.m. ET Friday to agree to a deal, which would likely be similar to the six-year, $103-million extension signed by Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox this offseason.

If not, Wilkerson's only options will be to play under the $15.7 million tag or sit out the entire season.

With an abundance of talent on the defensive line, New York's reluctance to hand Wilkerson a deal of that magnitude has been highlighted by the fact he's been surrounded by talks of a potential trade all offseason.

On the Fitzpatrick front, the Jets have reportedly been comfortable with their starter from last year missing OTAs and minicamp as they attempt to bridge the gap between their three-year, $24-million offer to him and the veteran's pay demands.

However, head coach Todd Bowles said in June that, with training camp looming, there has to be a time where the Jets can't wait for Fitzpatrick any longer.

"There comes a point if you get to Week 4 in training camp and he's not here, you know who your starter is going to be Week 1," Bowles said. "It's to the extreme, but there is a ticking clock. You have time until you don't have time."

The Jets are expected to open training camp on July 28.
