Chargers' stadium petition verified for November vote

The San Diego Chargers have submitted the required number of signatures to qualify their plan to build a new downtown stadium for a November vote.

The 110,380 signatures in favor of the new stadium plan surpassed the 66,477 required for the plan to be considered in the fall.

"The petition has been verified and found sufficient in signatures to qualify the ordinance to be submitted to the city council for adoption, or for rejection and submission to the electorate," city clerk Elizabeth Maland said Saturday in a memo, according to KGTV San Diego.

If the initiative passes, the Chargers will receive $300 million in earmarked funding from the NFL. Public funds for the stadium would come from a hike to San Diego's hotel room tax.

The Chargers have a deal in place to join the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood if the downtown initiative fails to gain the required votes. The franchise has until Jan. 17, 2017 to make a decision. However, if the proposal on the upcoming ballot passes before Nov. 15, the Chargers' deadline to decide will be extended to January 2018.
