Report: Chargers' stadium proposal needs two-thirds, not simple majority, for approval

The California State Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that proposed tax increases to fund the San Diego Chargers' downtown stadium plan will need a two-thirds majority of voters to pass, David Garrick of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

A previous ruling from a lower court said that tax increases by citizens initiatives could pass with a simple majority.

Recently, the Chargers collected more than 110,000 signatures, qualifying them to put a measure on a November ballot calling for a 6.5 percent increase in hotel taxes to fund a $1.15-billion subsidy for a new stadium.

The Chargers have indicated they planned all along for the initiative to need a two-thirds majority to pass.

Nonetheless, the higher hurdle certainly delivers a blow to the chances of the team's funding plan succeeding.
