Irsay: 2015 didn't factor into Luck contract negotiations

With the Indianapolis Colts locking quarterback Andrew Luck into the most lucrative contract in NFL history on Wednesday, many pondered how his poor 2015 season factored into the deal.

Luck played in just seven games, throwing 12 interceptions and only completing 55 percent of his passes, but Colts owner Jim Irsay says it wasn't a factor when discussing the new contract.

"We didn't go there," Irsay said on a conference call with Indianapolis media, according to Mike Chappell of Indysportscentral.com. "You look at the total body of work."

Irsay characterized the negotiations as "civil" and touted the offseason addition of rookie center Ryan Kelly as a positive for Luck's mindset going forward. He also pointed to some positives from the 2015 season, including a home win against the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in Week 9.

With both sides compromising slightly, Irsay pointed out he felt Luck deserved to be the highest-paid player in the game, and believes the new contract along with a difficult 2015 season will spur Luck on to be even better.

"I've never seen him more motivated," Irsay said. "That fire is in his eye in a special way."
