Marvin Lewis tells Bucs' Koetter to call more deep plays

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

After 13 seasons coaching the Cincinnati Bengals, Marvin Lewis has narrowed his coaching advice down to two words:

"Throw deep."

Those were the words of wisdom Lewis passed on to Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and former classmate Dirk Koetter.

"I'm serious," Koetter, who was a graduate student with Lewis at Idaho State University, told Jeff Papwoth of the Idaho State Journal. "Marvin's a defensive coach. I'm an offensive coach. He said offenses don't throw deep enough."

The Bengals completed 63 passes of more than 20 yards last season while giving up 39.

It's a simple but effective plan that both teams are equipped to use with receivers like A.J. Green and Mike Evans on their respective rosters.

Koetter will have the opportunity to use Lewis' advice this year after holding onto his play-calling duties in his first season as an NFL head coach.
