Bills' Watkins walks back optimistic training camp prediction

A week after predicting he would "definitely be available" for training camp, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins isn't quite as confident in his recovery.

Watkins, who had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot in mid-May, said on June 19 that he "might sit out two or three days" of camp, but had a different take Saturday.

"You never know," Watkins told ESPN's Vaughn McClure of his previous prediction, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak. "Hopefully I'll be back. If not, then cool. Get ready for the first game."

The 23-year-old receiver says he's playing it safe, having not run in three or four weeks, and listening to his team's medical staff ahead of the start of camp on July 30.

"Right now I feel good, but I got to go back and train and rehab," said Watkins. "Hopefully it feels good when I run and everything like that. I haven't ran in three or four weeks. Hopefully I'll feel good about it and I'll be on the field in training camp."

The Bills are unlikely to rush Watkins back after he was hampered by an ankle injury last season, missing three games, but he's expected to be the team's top receiving threat for the 2016 season and beyond.
