Rivers encouraged by Chargers' offseason moves

The San Diego Chargers have advanced to the playoffs just once in the last six seasons despite some elite-level production from the most important position on the field.

While the window for success may be closing with Philip Rivers now in his mid-30s, a strong offseason has the star quarterback excited about the roster.

"We feel good about where we are and we feel good about the pieces we added in free agency," Rivers told Will Brinson of CBS Sports. "And I think defensively you think about Brandon Mebane and offensively you go get Travis Benjamin and in the draft you draft Joey Bosa. And I know it's still a little early to say but I think we nailed that pick at No. 3 overall.

"Bringing in tight end Hunter Henry, a handful of other things. Matt Slauson, we signed late from the Chicago Bears at center, looks like he's penciled in there at center. So we're better. I know everybody gets excited in OTAs but we're better than we were at the end of last season. We're healthy and we added some good players."

Coming off a disastrous 4-12 finish, San Diego's worst mark since a 2003 campaign that put the club in position to draft Rivers, the offseason needs were fairly clear.

Benjamin finally provides a vertical threat to complement the abilities of Keenan Allen and Stevie Johnson underneath. Slauson provides a much-needed upgrade on the interior offensive line, and Bosa fills a glaring void on the defensive edge opposite Melvin Ingram.

San Diego will hope all those offseason additions can make an immediate impact and help the club challenge a suddenly vulnerable Denver Broncos team for the AFC West crown.
