Sammy Watkins may sit out 2-3 days of training camp

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins is taking a realistic approach to his recovery from offseason stress-fracture surgery on his foot.

While the goal remains being healthy enough for the beginning of training camp on July 30, Watkins admits the nature of the injury may limit his involvement.

"For training camp, I think I'll definitely be available," Watkins told Mike Hetherington of TSN.ca. "I might sit out two or three days. It's all about how I feel within those days. The goal is to come back and be prepared for training camp."

Watkins was unable to participate in Bills minicamp, but was able to remove his walking boot after his mid-May surgery.

The reality exists that Watkins could miss all of training camp, and whether or not he's healthy enough for the season opener is still in question due to the fickle nature of foot injuries.

Getting healthy for when it counts is obviously the priority for a player that was unstoppable at times last season, amassing 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns.

"Basically we are just taking it slow," Watkins said. "Doing the little things now as far as cutting and moving around; the basics. There's really no timetable. It's really when I feel healthy, when I am healthy."

"The important part is getting on the field and staying healthy. So, basically my whole summer will be staying in Buffalo getting better."

In the meantime, Watkins is echoing head coach Rex Ryan's sentiments in believing the Bills "won the offseason."

"I definitely do (think we won the offseason)," Watkins said when asked about his coach's comments. "I think we had heated practices but we competed for the most part on both sides of the ball. The defence and the offence really knock heads, me messing around with the defensive guys. I think this has been the best offseason that I've been a part of."
