Chiefs' Reid: Jamaal Charles may not be healthy for start of camp

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has progressed steadily in his return from a torn ACL in 2015, but that doesn't mean he'll be healthy enough for the start of training camp.

Head coach Andy Reid urged caution when asked about Charles during the Chiefs' OTAs on Thursday, noting the risks of a setback a player that's had two ACL surgeries in four years faces.

"We'll have to see with Jamaal," Reid said, according to Adam Teicher of ESPN. "You don't want to take any steps back. He had two good days here and then we'll just see how he does at camp. We're optimistic about the two days. But let's not rush him. We know what he's all about. Let's get him back to where he feels good and whatever timetable that is or how much he practices there, we'll see day by day."

Charles was able to participate individually in Chiefs' minicamp, but has not been able to return to football activities as of yet. He was given a rest day on Thursday after getting in work the previous two days.

The Chiefs are also dealing with the reality of outside linebacker Justin Houston's absence. Houston underwent ACL surgery in February and could miss the start of the season, despite optimism surrounding his rehab.

"I don't know how much he's going to do in camp," Reid said of Houston. "But, listen, he's where he needs to be right now and he's a hard worker. He's bound and determined to get back. We'll just see how it works out. There is no timetable. It's just when he's right, he's right and we'll roll."
