The value of a capable backup quarterback can't be overstated.

Though such players are typically few and far between at the professional level, the Green Bay Packers may soon have one of their own.

Brett Hundley, a fifth-round pick last year, enters his second season with every opportunity to solidify himself in the No. 2 role behind Aaron Rodgers.

As Ryan Wood of USA Today explains in his breakdown of Green Bay's offseason workout program, Hundley has been doing everything the team could ask of him:

Hundley has a live, powerful arm, if not always accurate. He carried himself with poise in minicamp, marching the first-team offense downfield for touchdowns in the two-minute drill. His competitiveness has blown away coaches and teammates alike. His grasp of the offense is clear. Hundley has been a tutor to some young teammates, helping them learn the playbook.

Wood also indicates Hundley's progression was a leading factor in the Packers' decision to let Scott Tolzien leave as a free agent earlier this year.

Green Bay ideally wouldn't have to turn to the former UCLA standout in the near future, as Rodgers remains arguably the league's premier quarterback.

But having depth at the most important position on the field can be imperative for a team's chances of enduring a long season.

And if Hundley can thrive in the opportunities he receives over the next few years - be it in the preseason or more meaningful action - it would be no surprise to see the Packers look to capitalize on his value and swing a trade for draft picks down the road.

Whether he establishes himself as a long-term backup, or generates interest as a starter elsewhere, the organization may get a substantial return on a Day 3 selection.
