Jets' Richardson lobbies for Wilkerson to receive extension similar to Cox's

New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson advocated for his teammate Muhammad Wilkerson, imploring his team to present him with a massive long-term contract.

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Eagles signed defensive tackle Fletcher Cox to a six-year extension worth $103 million, with $63 million guaranteed. Cox's deal reverberated around the league, and Wilkerson believes he's earned a deal that's comparable to his counterpart.

Richardson understood that a deal of Cox's length and stature may prove to be unfeasible for the Jets, but made it clear that Wilkerson deserves a massive long-term contract.

"It happens, you know, it happens," Richardson said to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "We don't have the money for it and Mo deserves it, so it is what it is."

Wilkerson said he feels unwanted by the Jets, as the two parties remain stagnant in contract discussions. The Jets applied the franchise tag to Wilkerson but he hasn't signed the tender yet. Both parties will need to reach a long-term deal by July 15, otherwise Wilkerson will be paid $15.7 million under the stipulations of the tag.

Richardson is under contract through 2017, but is envisioning a deal that's similar to Cox's when the time comes, praising the Eagles' defensive lineman for his on-field accomplishments.

"It ain't official until the ink is dry. We'll see when the time comes. Congratulations to Fletcher Cox. Well-deserved. He's always balled, in my eyes. He's another underrated guy who's getting brought to light."
