Woodhead escapes with ankle sprain at Chargers minicamp

San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead was forced to leave Wednesday's minicamp session with an ankle injury.

The training staff attended to Woodhead as he was down on the field and surrounded by teammates. He appeared to be favoring his left ankle as he headed for the sidelines under his own power shortly before the practice came to an end, according to Eric D. Williams of ESPN.

Head coach Mike McCoy later explained to reporters that reports coming from the medical staff are positive, and a source told Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune that Woodhead is dealing with a "run-of-the-mill" ankle sprain.

Woodhead is reportedly expected to be at full strength at the beginning of training camp next month. The 31-year-old's ability as a receiver again has him in line for the primary passing-game role in the backfield rotation.

Woodhead appeared in all 16 games last season, racking up 80 receptions for 755 yards and six touchdowns to go with his 336 yards and three scores on the ground.
