Sherman says Legion of Boom entering its prime

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman believes 2016 will be a banner year for him and his teammates.

Sherman told ESPN last week that 2015 was an off year for Seattle's vaunted defense, despite leading the NFL in scoring defense for the fourth consecutive year.

The Seahawks' secondary, propelled by Sherman along with star safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor, acts as the fulcrum of the defense. Sherman thinks the "Legion of Boom" is approaching its apex entering 2016.

"We're hitting our prime, that’s what I'd say," Sherman said Monday on ESPN 710 Seattle. "I think at the beginning with our infancy when we started this thing, it was our second, third years in the league. Now we're (in our) sixth, seventh years in the league. We're much more veteran. We have a great understanding of what's being asked of us and how to approach the game."

The Seahawks have made four consecutive playoff appearances and won a Super Bowl in 2013. Sporting one of the deepest and most talented groups in the NFL, Sherman's words may ring prophetic if the team captures the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in four years.
