Report: Miami almost failed securing Super Bowl bid

The NFL owners voted to award Super Bowls 53, 54, and 55 to Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles respectively on Tuesday night, but one of those sites almost missed out entirely.

With massive upgrades coming to the Miami Dolphins current facility - previously known as Sun Life Stadium - it was expected that South Florida would receive one of the three proposed Super Bowls.

According to a source from Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins almost missed out on securing the right to host any of the three games awarded.

Miami was initially on the ballot for Super Bowl 53, but pulled out alongside Tampa. That left the vote between just New Orleans and Atlanta, with the Falcons eventually winning.

The source said Miami should have won the bid without much difficulty, but struggled to compete with their in-state competition.

Along with Atlanta and Los Angeles, South Florida was expected to win one of the bids before the voting began, but experienced more difficulty than they should have, given the stadium upgrades and experience hosting the big game.

Ultimately, the report bodes well for the future bids of New Orleans and Tampa, who will likely be among the favorites to be a future host at the next Super Bowl vote.
