Giants remain cautious with Cruz, target training camp return

After losing wide receiver Victor Cruz for nearly two full seasons to a series of injuries, the New York Giants won't risk him missing any more time by rushing him back.

Head coach Ben McAdoo said Monday after practice that Cruz will continue to do light work, with the aim to have him healthy enough to participate in July's training camp.

"Right now, we're looking for him to get back here, and he's working to get back, for training camp," McAdoo said, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN. "That's the goal. Small steps."

Cruz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee in Week 6 of the 2014 campaign, and missed all of last season after tearing a calf muscle in training camp.

The 29-year-old agreed to a pay cut to avoid being cut from the team. With Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie Sterling Shepard, the Giants could have a dangerous passing attack if Cruz able to become the player he was before his injuries.

"We've got to get him healthy," quarterback Eli Manning said. "We've got to make sure that everybody is being smart and understanding that he's had several injuries and surgeries. So just make sure you're being smart with his workload and make sure we get him to training camp. When the doctors and everybody say he's cleared and ready to go, then that's a good thing."
