NFL makes minor changes to replay review rules

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

The NFL's owners have voted in favor of a proposal to slightly alter the rules concerning reviewable plays, the league announced.

Previously, a list of plays were identified as being reviewable. These included whether a player's knee was down before fumbling and whether a receiver got both feet down in bounds when making a catch, among a short list of other scenarios.

The list of reviewable plays didn't include some matters related to game administration, including the proper enforcement of penalties and downs.

Now, the list of reviewable plays includes an expanded section on game administration, and permits on-field officials to consult electronically with officials at the league office to ensure correct enforcement of rules.

The additions to the list of reviewable items include the following:

(1) Penalty enforcement.

(2) Proper down.

(3) Spot of a foul.

(4) Status of the game clock.

These minor changes should help protect the NFL against the potential embarrassment of not being able to review and correct an obvious error because it wasn't classified as reviewable under the previous rules.
