Report: NFL could guarantee Super Bowl in San Diego pending stadium approval

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

League meetings for the NFL will kick off Monday with plenty of items on the agenda, including decisions concerning where the Super Bowl will be played between 2019 and 2021.

Another big issue on the docket will be the future of the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers. The Raiders have recently gained momentum for a potential move to Las Vegas, while the Chargers are weighing the option of a proposed stadium in their downtown area.

According to Sam Farmer of Los Angeles Times, owners could make an "unusual" decision to guarantee a Super Bowl in San Diego, provided a new stadium is built in the city. There would not be a specific date of the proposed game, but a general time period could be offered.

This would ideally incentivize the citizens of San Diego to approve the proposed stadium, which will be voted on in November.

The league has continuously asserted it would prefer the Chargers stay put. Roger Goodell told a crowd of the team's supporters "the Chargers belong in San Diego" at a rally in April.
