Chargers can't believe nobody knew they'd pick Bosa

After quarterbacks came off the board in each of the top two spots, the San Diego Chargers' selection of Joey Bosa was the first surprise pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The vast majority of prognosticators had Laremy Tunsil, Ronnie Stanley, DeForest Buckner, or Jalen Ramsey landing with the Chargers at No. 3. Few, if any, so much as considered the Ohio State star.

But as Ricky Henne of the team's official website detailed in an oral history of the events that let to the pick, Bosa was the target from day one.

And the Chargers can't believe it wasn't more obvious.

"It was amusing to see," president of football operations John Spanos said. "We would sit back, read these mock drafts and see who people thought we would take. We would look around at each other and say, 'Man, I can't believe no one knows.'"

Early in draft preparations, a number of the club's front office executives believed it was unlikely that such a dominant defensive player would still be there for San Diego.

When the first two picks were traded to teams looking to draft quarterbacks, though, the Chargers felt assured they could get their guy.

"John got the text and told us about the trade, and we all high-fived in the room after that one because we knew if we stayed here and picked, we got him," general manager Tom Telesco said.

Bosa makes the jump to the NFL boasting an incredibly well-rounded skill set for the position. Not only should he bolster the defense's pass rush for the foreseeable future, but his dominance in the running game will presumably allow him to take on an every-down role as a rookie.
