The Miami Dolphins will likely need defensive end Cameron Wake healthy and productive if they're to make a playoff push, and it appears he's ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn Achilles sustained last season.

Dolphins executive vice president Mike Tannenbaum said Friday that Wake has "done everything (the Dolphins have) asked" as he attempts to get ready for the start of the season.

"He's really exceeded expectations, in terms of where he is and where our doctors thought he would be when he got hurt," Tannenbaum said, according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald. "Cam is the consummate pro, the consummate Dolphin, and we're lucky he’s here."

The Dolphins handed Wake a two-year, $15-million contract extension in early May, an indication that the team is confident he'll return to his Pro Bowl-level form.

"We're thrilled we were able to do that," Tannenbaum said. "Someone like Cam, he's the epitome of what we want our program to be about, not only on the field, but off the field."
