David Shaw plans to stay at Stanford, says he never spoke with 49ers

Though his name surfaces as a candidate for NFL coaching jobs a little more each year, Stanford head coach David Shaw says he has no plans to leave the Cardinal any time soon.

"Since I took this job, I have not interviewed or talked about another job with anybody, and I plan on it staying that way," Shaw told ESPN's David Lombardi on Wednesday.

Most recently, Shaw was rumored to be of interest to the San Francisco 49ers. Many speculated the job would appeal to Shaw, who could step into a higher-profile position, and presumably a greater payday, without even needing to leave the state of California.

But according to Shaw, the two parties never convened for a cup of coffee.

"I never talked to anyone from the 49ers, there was no job offered, there was no interview process," he said.

Under Shaw's leadership, Stanford has made three trips to the Rose Bowl in the last four years, winning the big game during two of them. Overall, the Cardinal is 54-14 since Shaw took over the reigns from Jim Harbaugh, who left for the very same 49ers after the 2010 season.

Stanford is expected to field another competitive team this year, led by running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Christian McCaffrey.
