The Oakland Raiders are pleased with the early returns on fourth-round pick Connor Cook.

The quarterback has been putting his considerable physical gifts on display, and could push Matt McGloin for his backup job if he continues to impress throughout the offseason and training camp.

"I think he's been outstanding," head coach Jack Del Rio said Friday, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. "He comes in, had a tremendous career and is very humble. Obviously he is intelligent. He asks good questions. He's got arm talent. It's a matter of getting familiar (with) what we do and how we do it. ...

"I think he's off to a great start."

The knock on Cook coming out of Michigan State wasn't his physical skill set, but character concerns, including the fact his teammates didn't vote him an offensive captain.

But Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie's philosophy of stockpiling quarterback talent has been well-known since his time with the Green Bay Packers, and his ability to find QBs outside the first round is evident as second-round pick Derek Carr flourishes as a starter.
