Cardinals hoping to reach new deal with Mathieu in near future

Tyrann Mathieu has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Arizona Cardinals since being selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft following a year away from football.

Mathieu has been a two-time All-Pro and one of the most versatile defensive backs in the NFL during his tenure, so it's no surprise the Cardinals want to lock him up for a while.

"We haven't put a deadline on that yet but because of the draft and because of free agency we probably didn't put enough time into it during that period as we could have or should have," Cardinals general manager Steve Keim told Pro Football Talk. "But that's something that we'll jump back on here shortly. We've had great dialogue with Tom Condon and his group, who represents Tyrann. We have a really good relationship and there's no question both sides want to get something done. So hopefully we'll get something done in the near future."

Mathieu is currently rehabing a knee injury, which could put a hold on any long-term talks, but his teammate Larry Fitzgerald says he "heals like Wolverine," so a deal could be coming sooner than later.

The 23-year-old has 195 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and eight interceptions through 40 games in his NFL career.
