NFL vice president of security steps down

John David Mercer / USA TODAY Sports

NFL vice president of security Jeffrey Miller has resigned to take a new job, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy confirmed to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

"He informed the league last month that he was going to take a job on the West Coast with a private security firm," McCarthy said. "He worked the draft, will work at the league meeting and subsequent training session. He will leave the NFL next month."

Miller has been the NFL's head of security since being hired in 2008. He previously served as the state police commissioner of Pennsylvania.

A source told Florio the resignation is not performance-based, nor was it initiated by the league. Miller is taking the new position in part so he can live on the West Coast instead of in New York, where the league offices are located.

Miller gained some recognition when it was reported the infamous Ray Rice elevator video was sent to him prior to being released online, but no evidence was found to support the claim by an independent investigation.

The league has reportedly yet to decide on a replacement.
