Browns' Cody Kessler: Could compete for starting spot

Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown suggests that Kessler has a chance to compete for the team's starting QB job, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Analysis:

In response to the notion that Kessler isn't in the mix to make a run at the assignment, Brown noted, "I beg to differ with that. I do think Cody is a guy that I would not want to sleep on at all if I wanted to be the starting quarterback of the Browns." With that in mind, Kessler joins a QB depth chart that currently also rosters presumed starter Robert Griffin, as well as Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw. While it would be a big upset to see Kessler overtake Griffin in the short-term, Brown's comments indicate that the team's plans for Kessler are not limited to grooming him for backup duties at the NFL level. Meanwhile, when it comes time to thin out the team's crowded QB situation, it continues to appear likely that the 36-year-old McCown is a candidate to land elsewhere.
