Jets to enter OTAs with Smith as starting QB; 'still working' on Fitzpatrick return

After drafting Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft, the New York Jets' situation under center remains unclear.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said Friday night that Geno Smith will enter the Jets OTAs as the first-team quarterback and that the team is still working to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that Fitzpatrick would rather sit out the 2016 season than sign with the Jets at their current contract offer. Now that New York has brought in Hackenberg, Fitzpatrick has lost some leverage in contract negotiations and likely won't see an increase in offer.

Smith had no starts in the 2015 season and threw for 265 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in relief duty. He started 29 games over his first two NFL seasons, registering 5,571 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions with a record of 11-18.
